There are a few colours I love ardently and without waning passion; navy blue, rich ruby red, and emerald green. For some reason you don’t see a lot of emerald green clothes, let alone dresses, so I was pretty taken with the Voodoo Vixen Joanne dress when I found it recently.
Featuring emerald green lace layered over a black underlay, a square cut neckline with wide cut straps and a gently flaring skirt, this dress is a simple and pretty piece that I knew would work well with my red hair and pale skin. Lucky me that Voodoo Vixen were happy to send one my way so I could review it for you.
Since this dress is both simple and eye catching at once, thanks to that lovely green, I decided to style it up as if I were wearing it for an evening out. Adding some jewellery and a fascinator would even make this a sweet, appropriate dress to wear as a wedding guest, perfect for the upcoming wedding season.
This dress could easily be worn very simply without the black and lace accents I’ve layered over it above. I can imagine effortlessly slipping this dress on with a pair of cute flats and a light cardigan to enjoy an evening socialising in the waning sunlight of a summer evening in the garden (or pub garden, as so many Brits enjoy) with friends. It’s pure comfort, with plenty of give to allow for a comfortable fit and no pinching or digging in after hours of wear. There’s a little extra room in the fit for me in the XL I’m wearing, made for a 33inch waist, so if you’re between sizes you could probably size down if you don’t want any looseness.
This dress is simple and sweet and lovely. I love the richness of the green and this has got to be one of the first times in recent memory that a dress without a full circle skirt hasn’t left me with a slight feeling of ‘oh but if only the skirt had been fuller it would have been perfect.’ I think the cut of this dress is flattering and slimming, two things I won’t turn my nose up at.

I didn’t detail where I got it from because I got it from eBay about 8 years ago and knew I wouldn’t be able to direct people to the exact product after all this time. I think it was from a wedding seller though, so I’m sure you’ll be able to find similar things if you eBay ‘black lace bolero’ and filter the results possibly into the wedding categories. Sorry I couldn’t give you the exact product! ❤

My hair isn’t as long as this really, I’m wearing a set of clip on extensions in this picture to make it look longer. My natural hair comes to my shoulders or higher when pincurled, since the length then bounces up. But to get these curls in the picture I either pincurl my hair overnight and brush out in the morning, or I use hot rollers to revive an older pincurl set the day of and brush it out at least an hour later or longer if I have the time to leave the rollers in longer. Long hair does drag curls down, so you’ll need to find a really good firm hold hairspray to help keep the curls bouncy, but if your hair is really long you might only be able to get Old Hollywood style waves to last longest.

What a stunning dress, you look absolutely gorgeous in it! It makes me wish even more than Voodoo Vixen were cut in a way that’s more flattering for hourglass shaped bodies, rather than pear & apple shapes as I’d never look as amazing in it as you do
