Some dresses are so special there’s almost no adequate way to describe them, but still I will try. The Cupcake dress by Unique Vintage is frothy, delicate, glamorous and timeless, not to mention as sweet as its name suggests. It’s the kind of dress that makes me immediately flash back to watching Grease on repeat as a child, marveling at the intricacy and beauty of those prom dresses, with their full skirts, their cinched waists, those incredible fluffy busts. Like milkshakes in dress form, if you happen to like drinking milkshakes filled with diamonds and silk. That’s the kind of sugary level of optimum glamour we’re talking about, and I love it.
More accurately, I F*#&ing love it, but let’s pretend for this post at least that I am as ladylike as this dress suggests and that my fervent passion for splendid clothing would never move me to such crass heights.
(Except that it does and it has, many a time. But still. Let’s pretend.)
Now, put on your gloves and your sparkliest shoes and let’s look at this utter beauty together.
Obviously it’s almost too redundant to even bother saying, but this would be a perfect prom dress. It’s so gorgeous, though, that it goes beyond that. This dress is worthy of weddings, of balls and galas and anniversaries. It’s so beautiful that I fully support the notion that this dress is worth having just to create an event around wearing it. I am 100% down with deciding to host a glamorous, elaborate dinner party just so you can make you friends dress up fancy and eat delicious food together while you swish around in this dress. I am even on board with the idea that you use this dress as a humorous excuse not to take life too seriously, to grab your friends and go together in your gowns and tuxes just to eat at McDonalds, to have a evening dressed ridiculously in front of a campfire eating smores and laughing before you all change into your PJs and crawl into your tents. Hell, have a Grease marathon on your sofa with your favourite people in this dress. When there is a will, there’s a way, and this dress deserves a way, no matter what it is.
This mint beauty is made of layers of soft swiss dotted mesh and tulle, creating a skirt simply made to flounce and twirl. The sweetheart bust features intricate rows of ruffles, leading down into the boned waist featuring satin pleat work. It actually has adjutable thin satin spaghetti straps, which I tucked inside the bodice for this strapless look. It closes with a hidden back zipper, and, no doubt, your gasp of joy.
My measurements are between sizes in Unique Vintage’s own line so I tend to size into the 2X to be safe these days. In a structured dress like this sometimes that’s a gamble as my bust is technically 2 inches bigger than the 2X charts for, but the bust fit me perfectly, held up with help from the boning without even using the shoulder straps. As there is boning and a lot of intricate construction, it’s not a dress with stretch you can rely on to gain your fit, so you should definitely study the size chart. My 2X measures 43 inches in the bust and I was just able to zip in my 45 inch bust. The waist flat measures 36 inches with no more than 1 inch of give. Those measurements line up exactly with the size chart, making this a true to size dress all over.
The Cupcake dress comes in both mint and peach sizes XS-4X for $110. Unique Vintage ship internationally and offer a loyalty program for money off future orders.
