Patio dresses are popular pieces amongst 50s loving modern pinups. As a plus size gal, whenever I see a patio-dress-clad lovely pop up on my Instagram feed I sigh a little inside, knowing I don’t have the time or the funds to conduct a widespread search for a patio dress that might fit me.
So imagine how excited I got a few months back to be scrolling through my Instagram feed, again (always, basically,) and come across this preview:
Did you image I was crazy stupid excited? Because I was crazy stupid excited. Nevermind that not only were these sets a gorgeous modern recreation of something I’d long been dying to possess, but also one of the sets offered was turquoise, a colour I’ve recently become obsessed with. It was like it was meant to be. My sad little internal sigh at the sight of anything patio was now a happy sigh, and I have Lady K Loves to thank for it.
Top: Lydia top C/O Lady K Loves
Skirt: Darling skirt C/O Lady K Loves
Bag: Red Acrylic Bag by Lola Von Rose
Shoes: Espadrilles by F&F at Tesco
Bamboo bangles: 6 pack from Pinup Girl Clothing
Other Bangles: Gold – Primark / Red – Thrifted
The wonderful thing about these Lady K Loves sets is that rather than being a wear-it-one-way patio dress, it’s a full circle skirt and separate shirt, allowing you to mix and match the pieces with the rest of your wardrobe to your heart’s fullest content. The Lydia patio top has a ‘tail’ cut front hem which allows you to wear it tied at the waist should you want to, as I’ve shown in pictures, or simply tuck it into your skirt/bottoms like a normal shirt, giving the top itself another level of versatility.
The set comes in black, coral or turquoise, available to purchase separately, but each full circle skirt sports pockets and each top has Mexican patio style metallic ribbon and ric rac detailing on both the front and the back. The shirt even fastens with cute little crystal buttons, no design detail unconsidered. Both pieces have no stretch and are true to the size chart, so you should follow it exactly, though the top does have a relaxed, loose cut. The skirt is 29 inches long and has beautiful twirlability, fitting a petticoat with ease.
The Lydia Patio tops cost £42 and the Darling circle skirt costs £45, both available in sizes XS-XXL. All of Lady K Loves clothing is ethically made by highly skilled craftspeople in fair trade countries, with their jeans being made specially here at home in England, so it’s wonderful knowing the beauty of their pieces doesn’t come with the high human cost of fast fashion. It’s yet another reason I’ll be treasuring this slice of patio perfection.
