If there’s one item of clothing that works as a perfect wardrobe staple for vintage-style lovers, it’s a gathered skirt. They’re easy to dress both up and down, you can use them to create a great 1950s inspired outfit but you can also just rock them in a dozen ways to look entirely modern. They’re easy to wear, offer variety, and, if you’re super lucky, they have pockets, like this awesome Victorine 50s skirt by Hell Bunny.

Can you really beat a good gingham skirt? I don’t think so. Especially a black and white one, because unlike coloured gingham it doesn’t feel as much like it belongs purely in the warmer seasons, so you can wear it year round. In fact, doing so opens up extra styling options as you can lean into fresh feeling outfits for summer but richer, moodier tones in winter. For this outfit I loved being able to add the pop of red to break up the black and white, but I know in winter I’ll be excited to mix in burgundy and emerald greens to create other outfits.
The gathers in this skirt are perfectly numbered, achieving excellent volume without looking excessively wide when paired with a petticoat, but also holding its shape well when worn without one. In these pictures I only wore a slim-medium volume petticoat and I love the shape it achieved. The waistband fastens in the back by a zip topped with a black button, and the skirt is machine washable.
I asked for it in my usual Hell Bunny 2XL. As it’s made from cotton it’s non-stretch with no give in the waistband. It flat measures 38 inches in the waist, and the skirt is 27 inches long.
If you love this gingham fabric but gathered skirts aren’t for you, there’s a pinafore dress and a v-neck 50s dress that might suit your taste better. The latter is one of the items that Hell Bunny is now offering in sizes 5XL and 6XL for the first time, after recently extending their plus sizes in some of their best selling items from this season. It’s always more complicated than people think it is for brands to extend their size range, so I’m hoping the new sizes will sell well for them so that Hell Bunny can continue to offer these additional sizes in even more of their products moving forward. Pretty clothes for everyone!
The Victorine 50s skirt comes in sizes XS-4XL. Discount code Amymay20!% will get you 20% off all orders from hellbunny.com, including sale, and can be used as many times as you like.

Hell Bunny are a perennial favourite with me, as the fit is always spot on for my body shape (unlike some other brands unfortunately), so I’ve benefitted from your discount code (thank you!) on many occasions.
I particularly like the combination of black, white and red with the unexpected addition of a straw hat, which just adds a final piece of magic to the outfit!
