It’s official, the leaves are starting to change colours on all the country roads near my house, which means I am in my element. Time to throw on all the plaids, checks and tartans I can find, autumn is truly on its way.

The Devon dress is one of Unique Vintage’s staple dress shapes, returning regularly in new prints and patterns to the delight of its fans. Indeed, this season there are 9 new colourways, some plaids in colours very reminiscent of the Hogwarts houses, others in plainer single colour checks that are perfect for Halloween, one a plain black, a holidays-perfect burgundy sequin which is killing me, and my favourite, this, the burgundy and grey plaid I’m wearing here. It’s a classic autumn colour palette paired with a classic dress shape, together chic and understated but still offering something interesting beyond a solid colour. It makes me think of mulled wine, of wool tights, even of the thick plaid winter jackets my brother and I used to wear to work on the farm when we were teens. It is, in short, a fall jewel, and I love it. 

The Devon dress is a simple dress cut, boasting a bateau neckline that dips into a wide V in the back, fitted through the waist where it’s cinched by the black notched belt it comes with (I’ve swapped that out for a velvet belt here, because I love texture,) and arcing out into a flared skirt, bepocketed for our joy and glory. The three-quarter length sleeves offer some warmth, in addition to being a flattering sleeve length for every body type, and there’s room in the swing skirt for a medium volume petticoat. I’ve worn it in these pictures without any petticoat and it still hangs in a lovely shape. 

I asked for this dress in the 2X size I typically wear in Unique Vintage pieces. The waist flat measures 42 inches with give from the bias to 43 inches, while the bust flat measures 48 inches with give to 49. The skirt is 27 inches long. The sleeves are 18 inches in circumference across the bicep, so there’s plenty of comfortable room for movement even for large upper arms.
