Long gone are the days I could wear a towering, dainty heel that was barely strapped onto my foot by a criss-cross of skimpy straps–well, about 4 years gone, really. These days I appreciate the distinct lack of a threat of a twisted ankle provided by a thicker heel, an enclosed vamp, a solid ankle strap. Give me stability or give me flats! All that does not necessarily mean frumpy, ugly shoes, thank goodness, though admittedly finding pretty, sensible heels is harder than finding, say, gorgeous death traps. Lucky me that vintage inspired brands are brilliant for finding the kind of heels I need, and the Veronica heels are one of my all time favourites.
The Veronica heels are a true classic. Art Deco inspired, they feature an open peep toe, multiple triangular cut-outs across the upper vamp, and a t-bar ankle trap. The geometric design is simple and structured, contributing to an elegance that makes these heels a beautiful finishing touch to any special outfit. The ankle straps fasten with a gold coloured buckle, and the lining of the inner sole is a soft pink. The 8.5cm heel has a triangular slant, creating a thick and sturdy heel that never feels flimsy and is unlikely to wedge between cobblestones or cause panic approaching a drain in the street. All in all, they’re a timeless design that can be worn over and over even as trends change.
The fact that they’re made in PU makes them easy to clean, a huge bonus for me because my aesthetic love for materials such a suede constantly jars with the reality that I live in the countryside, where sometimes just getting to and from one’s car can be an obstacle course of gravel, mud and puddles, let alone the kinds of terrain I battle to shoot pictures for this blog. For this shoot alone the bluebell woods provided a beautiful backdrop but our light recent rain meant the ground wasn’t very firm, so by the end of this shoot I had mud caked up the heels. Within minutes of returning home I had these babies cleaned off easily with just a damp cloth. Sorted!
I have slightly wide feet so depending on the brand I can vary between wearing a UK 7 or an 8 if wide options aren’t offered, so in Lulu Hun I usually size up into an 8. I did so for these Veronicas and they’re a perfect fit, with no pinching or rubbing, and the ankle strap keeps them on my feet with no wobbles.
The Veronica heels are available in UK sizes 3-9, and are currently available in Ivory, Navy, and Green. Lulu Hun ship worldwide and can be found in-store in Collectif’s UK shops, and are carried by select stockists around the globe in-store and online.
