Once you’ve been in the vintage-inspired modern-made clothing realm for long enough you’re often able to recognise which brand made an item of clothing at first glance. Some brands are quirkier with their prints, others have certain signature design details they repeat over and over. For me, I’m usually able to recognise a The Pretty Dress Company item from the timeless simplicity of its design. Typically sleek, understated and endlessly chic, they’re a perfect mixture of 1950s silhouettes meeting the modern world, wearable for vintage lovers and current-fashion lovers alike. Today’s Myla dress is another perfect example of TPDC’s refined elegance.
Another way I can tell if a dress is from The Pretty Dress Company pretty easily is if it’s this cobalt blue colour–TPDC offer dresses in a variety of prints, patterns and colours, but cobalt is a gorgeous shade they regularly utilise that most other vintage-inspired brands generally don’t. This blue is bright but not obnoxious, both fresh and exciting. It’s just bright enough that it will play up–rather than wash out–pretty much every skin tone, and it works year round.
The Myla dress is a simple dress shape, a V-neckline cut into a fitted bodice, half length sleeves, and a full circle skirt, which sports pockets in the side seams. Its simplicity provides maximum versatility, a flattering yet unadorned dress that can be worn for every occasion and styled a million ways. In warmer weather you can pair it with a wide brimmed sun hat and wedges to lean into vintage summer casual, while colder months and special occasions allow you to get truly creative with your layers and accessories. If the cobalt blue gives you pause, know that in addition to black as your accessory colour, as pictured, every metallic tone will also work delightfully, as will a pop of red, chaste cream, almost all browns, and every shade of blue, if you want to play with gradients and a monotone look. Plus, let us not overlook the possible addition of natural textures, such as raffia, bamboo, wicker or straw pieces, which will ground the vibrancy of the blue beautifully. In short, this dress can take you to the work place as well as on a first date, all the way through to a day at your favourite vintage fair or attending a wedding. And since it’s made in 14 other colours, it’s likely your favourite colour is available and ready to make you look and feel fabulous if this cobalt really isn’t for you.
The Pretty Dress Company design and make all their pieces in the UK, to an excellent standard. The Myla dress is made from the same luxe stretch crepe fabric that is employed in many of their other dress styles, including the Leyla, which I previously reviewed. It’s a high quality material, with a weight to it that I haven’t found to be typical in crepes used by other companies. It has a gentle stretch which offers ease of movement and comfort in wear that I truly appreciate as someone who fidgets along the seams of her clothing a great deal. The dress is fully lined, another detail that adds to its overall quality of production.
I asked for this dress in a size 20, which is my go-to for TPDC pieces. It’s bang on to the size chart, with a little extra forgiveness afforded by the stretch in the fabric, The waist is flat at 38 inches with stretch to just over 41, while the bust measures flat at 45 inches with stretch to 49. In the sleeves the circumference of the bicep measures just shy of 15 inches flat, with stretch to just under 17 inches. The skirt is 30 inches long. The pockets have room for my iPhone 7 Plus alongside a few other smaller essentials, like a compact, lipstick, and your cards. As the skirt is a full circle there’s room for you to wear the biggest petticoat that your heart desires.
The Myla dress is available in 15 solid colours, in expected classics like black and red but also other fun shades like coral and pastel yellow. It’s readily available in UK sizes 8-20, but The Pretty Dress Company offer a custom made service which allows you to order their pieces in custom sizes as well as pairing any of their signature dress cuts with their current fabric selections.
