If there’s one thing ya girl likes, it’s velvet for cold weather months. To be honest, I also love it for occasion wear all year round, as England is usually cool enough for that to be easily possible. A nice velvet gown for an evening function? Chef’s kiss! I mean, right now, on the heels of a heatwave and anticipating yet another, yeah, maybe we’re all feeling a little velvet-adverse at this precise moment. I geeet it, I geeet it. But picture the scene: you wake up to a crisp September day, there’s a freshness to the air, you’re excited about the prospect of the leaves falling but there’s still a month or so until they do, you’ve got plans for that evening you’re looking forward to, and this blue velvet Orion dress is hanging on the back of your wardrobe, ready to go. Doesn’t that sound nice? So, with that in mind, let’s look at this plush little baby!

Bluebells & Cupcake Frills [Unique Vintage]
Some dresses are so special there’s almost no adequate way to describe them, but still I will try. The Cupcake dress by Unique Vintage is frothy, delicate, glamorous and timeless, not to mention as sweet as its name suggests. It’s the kind of dress that makes me immediately flash back to watching Grease on repeat as a child, marveling at the intricacy and beauty of those prom dresses, with their full skirts, their cinched waists, those incredible fluffy busts. Like milkshakes in dress form, if you happen to like drinking milkshakes filled with diamonds and silk. That’s the kind of sugary level of optimum glamour we’re talking about, and I love it.
More accurately, I F*#&ing love it, but let’s pretend for this post at least that I am as ladylike as this dress suggests and that my fervent passion for splendid clothing would never move me to such crass heights.
(Except that it does and it has, many a time. But still. Let’s pretend.)
Now, put on your gloves and your sparkliest shoes and let’s look at this utter beauty together. Continue reading
Oh Verona [Lindybop]
I review a lot of mid-price point pinup dresses, so I’ve been making an effort lately to dig out some of the more budget-friendly items in my closet to review for ladies who are working with fewer spendable bucks leftover at the end of their paychecks. Today that budget pick is the Verona dress from Lindybop.
A black swing dress with a flared box pleat skirt, a lace overlay bust and a cut out detail on the back, this is a modest but pretty design that would work great as a little black dress of an evening.
