Regular readers of this blog know Maybelline’s Super Stay Matte Ink liquid lipsticks are my Holy Grail lip product. If you’re a stranger to these parts and found your way here looking for an overall review of the Matte Inks then you can read my original review here, as well as my many subsequent posts containing swatches and shade comparisons from different shade releases. Today I’m swatching the Birthday Edition shades. Let’s get to it!
The Birthday Edition contains 6 new shades of our beloved Matte Inks. Only 3 shades seem to be available here in the UK for some reason, so unfortunately I haven’t swatched the full 6 for you. The 6 shades are: Show Runner, Birthday Bestie, Life of the Party, Guest of Honor, Party Goer, and Birthday Babe. They’re all scented like birthday cake, so expect a vanilla scent. As someone will sinus issues that dampen my sense of smell I can’t accurately comment on how strong the scent is because I didn’t notice it at all while wearing or swatching, and only noticed it when I deliberately opened the tube in close proximity to my nose. If you have a strong sense of smell, though, and are sensitive to scents it’s possible this could be off-putting for you, and it might be worth giving a tester a little sniff in-store before you purchase if that may be a deal-breaker for you.
The packaging for the Birthday Edition shades features a scattered holographic glitter motif printed onto the front sticker, a fun touch for those who enjoy sparkles.
400 Show runner
Show Runner is a warm peach shade. A great nude option for some, on darker and deep skin tones I think it would probably need a darker lip liner applied before being used as an ombre in the centre of the lip.
395 Birthday Bestie
Birthday Bestie is a warm mid pink. An excellent day-to-day, ‘my lips but better’ shade for fair complexions. Many of the previously released light pinks were duskier or had more mauve undertones. I think this might be most like the limited edition Puma shade Fearless, but I can’t say for sure as my younger sister has my only tube of that shade. I’ve popped some swatches below comparing this shade to past pinks as I think it’s the most likely to be a shade people need to suss out the undertones compared to their existing collections.
390 Life of the Party
My favourite of the new shades, Life of the Party is a bright raspberry pink. Since the Matte Inks are my favourite lipstick I’ve been disappointed up ’til now that there hasn’t been a bright but rich pink available, as Pathfinder wasn’t bright enough and Romantic wasn’t rich enough for me, leaning too purple. Life of the Party is exactly what I was waiting for, a hot pink that reads as fun and playful, but can still be casual.
