One of the strange things about modern fashion, I’ve found, is that many people view wearing any dress as making a great effort, producing a perceived automatic higher level of dressiness in the beholder, despite the fact that pairing separates together literally takes more effort than donning one dress. A dress by itself is its own outfit, with the option to add more layers and accessories to elevate its stylishness and to adjust for weather and occasion, yet even a casual dress can often be viewed as ‘fancy’ by some. For regular dress wearers, shirtdresses are perfect day-to-day casual pieces, but because they’re collared and generally modest you can wear them in all manner of environments, appearing put together with very little real effort expended. Choose a shirt dress in a classic Horrockses Fashion print from their Joanie Clothing collaboration and voila, your easy outfit is vintage loveliness layered upon vintage loveliness.

A Casual Leopard [Dolly & Dotty]
A couple days ago I shared with you Dolly & Dotty’s leopard print Lily dress. I really tried to emphasise that it could be styled both up or down, but at the end of the day we all have dress cuts we gravitate towards and if Lily didn’t tick your personal box then that’s okay. Buuuut, saying that, I don’t think that necessarily means Dolly & Dotty’s leopard print isn’t for you, because it’s a delightfully understated leopard print (as far as leopard prints ever can be, really,) and they utilise it in several other clothing items. Today I wanted to show you another of the options, just because I love this li’l lep so much. Shirtwaister fans, this one’s for you–let’s look at Penelope!
Polly, Polly, Polly [Dolly & Dotty]
I think if I had to choose a favourite gingham colour I would have to–after much lip chewing and frowning–choose yellow. A yellow gingham just feels so undeniably happy to me, all sunshine and bright smiles in a way that immediately summons good vibes and great memories. And would you look at that, today we’re going full on yellow gingham.
Perrie on the Daily [Lindy Bop]
As much as I love a wonderfully glam dress, these days I think it excites me more to find a dress that can be worn both truly casually, in all the modern ways that that means to me, right through to a vintage inspired look that can morph with the season and my mood. The Perrie shirtdress by Lindy Bop can do both of those things with ease, and in this navy colourway it’s ready to be rocked year round.
Claudine on a Picnic [Lindy Bop]
I was thinking the other day about the kinds of prints I love and why, and for some of them it boils down to something surprisingly simple: squares. My winter favourite, plaid, and my summer favourite, gingham, are both prints created by criss-crossing coloured lines to create squares of various sizes. As boring as that sounds, that description can also be applied to picnic blankets, and is there a single person out there who’s willing to say they hate picnics? If there is, there shouldn’t be.
This Lindy Bop Claudine dress makes me think of picnics, and buttercups, and being a bit too excited to be able to bust out one’s sunglasses for the first time this season because the sun, and even some warmth, are finally here. Let’s soak it all in!
Brooklyn Plaid [Unique Vintage]
Spring may be on its way–hell, technically speaking, it may already be here, but judging by the winds whistling down my chimney and clattering against my windows, the weather itself didn’t get the memo. I feel wholly justified, therefore, in reaching not only for sleeves but for plaid, and this Brooklyn dress by Unique Vintage is the perfect choice for both.
