That’s My Flava! [Miss Candyfloss]

Twice a year I look forward to the release of Miss Candyfloss’s lookbook for their new season. It always goes the same way; the second I realise it’s online I rush to load it up on my phone, then take screenshots of all my favourite items, whiiiiich basically ends up being at least 20 products. Over the following weeks I periodically revisit those screenshots, daydreaming about my favourite pieces and wondering which events in the coming season I will wear them for. (I mean, there’s a bit of sensible budgeting that happens there in my brain, as I whittle down what I’ll realistically be able to buy myself, but still, in the daydreaming part I can enjoy them all.) Somehow, there’s always one stand out piece that’s my favourite at first glance, and it always remains so in anticipation of its release, even if that’s months later. For SS20? My favourite was Flava-Rose, and my, she sure lives up to that in person.

The Epitome of Spring [Miss Candyfloss]

Considering how out-of-the-ordinary everything is these days I can’t tell you how much it means to me to be able to still enjoy the building sunshine, fresh breezes and blooming flowers of spring. Spring is my favourite season anyway, and only a tiny bit because my birthday is in May, but right now? Right now all my favourite parts of the sweetest, lightest season feel even more beautiful and uplifting. Sun peaking through the curtains in the early morning, the chance to open your windows without it being an immediate mistake because of freezing air or insistent insects, and, let’s face it, right now especially, the chance to wear something that feels and looks just plain happy and floaty and lovely. This new dress by Miss Candyfloss definitely counts as the latter.

What’s this, sunshine? When I tell you we haven’t had sun at the weekend in weeks it’s no joke–lately it’s been all rain almost all the time, so my hair has been nothing but frizz, the blog has been near silent because I’ve been unable to shoot, and my garden now has what can only be described as swamp-patches. Monroe’s A Bombshell [Miss Candyfloss]

The fact that Miss Candyfloss release a Lookbook well in advance of each season is both a blessing and a curse; the former because it allows you time to plan out your purchases for the season according to your budget, and the latter because when you spot an item that captures your heart it can feel like an eternity passes waiting for its release. There’s always a dozen items I covet in each lookbook, easily, but this Monroe-Lee was my favourite of them all, which is saying something considering the Marilyn inspired Autumn-Winter line of this season has been my favourite ever of all of Miss Candyfloss’s gorgeous lines. I can imagine it’s hard to live up to such anticipation and praise, but this dress does so easily.

Maeby Baby, Maeby Lou [Miss Candyfloss]

I’ve heard it said that everyone has a base colour they build their wardrobe around, either black, navy, brown or grey. I’ve never felt I had an overwhelming pull towards any of those neutrals but if I look at my wardrobe on the whole I can definitely see that I’ve ended up with black as my neutral base. It might be funny, then, to consider that the past couple months I’ve become a bit obsessed with trying to add greys and browns to my collection, and have become increasingly frustrated with the limited options. Can I find a brown tweed swing skirt anywhere? No. A plain grey one then? No!

Thankfully, though my search for separates has been disappointing, my beloved Miss Candyfloss is happy to lead the charge with beautiful grey dresses that could never disappoint.

Houndstooth Check [Miss Candyfloss]

While I love all checks, plaids and tartans pretty indiscriminately, it’s generally true that within the vintage-inspired world they’re often employed in clothing styles that, by our standards, veer more towards the casual. I do have pieces that can be worn more formally and they are all made by Miss Candyfloss, so it’s no wonder that they’re my go-to favourite brand for autumn and winter styles. What I love about this Norina-Lou dress is that they’ve taken their skill at producing elegant checks and mixed it with the utilisation of another classic winter print which, in my opinion, repro brands don’t use enough–houndstooth.

Behold, a dress that is both check and dogstooth, and both casual and possible to dress up. A winter unicorn!

Fine Leontine [Miss Candyfloss]

I love sleeved dresses for the colder months but I don’t often buy them because all of my vintage-style shopping is done online, and of course anything that doesn’t fit requires the more testing rigmarole of arranging and posting a return compared to the fairly simple task of walking a hanger back to the clothes rail it came from. When it comes to sleeved dresses it’s the threat of the likelihood of a return that deters me, because my large upper arms regularly determine that long-sleeved dresses which technically fit are, in reality, too uncomfortable to wear.

Nothing bugs me more than a sleeve that’s so tight across the biceps that I can’t move my arms in a normal range of movement, let alone even sit still comfortably without feeling tight compression or pinching. Which is why I am always so grateful that Miss Candyfloss, the verifiable winners of creating the best vintage-inspired Autumn-winter designs, always scale up their sizes beautifully and I have never yet experienced any discomfort when donning one of their sleeved dresses. The fact that all of those dresses are also achingly glamorous and chic almost comes in second to the grand scale of my gratitude and relief.

Sophistication in Romane-Bo [Miss Candyfloss]

It’s that beautiful time of year again. Yes, I do sort of mean autumn, but mostly I actually mean it’s time for Miss Candyfloss to start releasing their Autumn/Winter line. Miss C release such superb winter collections that I genuinely get excited in mid summer just anticipating what each year’s newest seasonal offerings might be. They can always be relied upon to produce chic, timeless, sophisticated designs, which cover every occasion from dinner party glamour to office-friendly. They are, in short, my favourite company for cool weather wear, and this year’s Marilyn Monroe inspired collections have once more surpassed my high expectations.

Giselle in Roses [Miss Candyfloss]

When it comes to polka dots, I’m a 50/50 girl. If they’re small enough and on a background colour I really love, I can get into moods in which I am all for them. The rest of the time I will probably not-entirely-correctly say ‘Yeaaah…I don’t really like polka dots.’

When I first saw a picture of this dress I thought it was red polka dots on a pale blue background, and even though theoretically if I peer into the folder marked ‘Amy’s taste’ in my mind that doesn’t sound like a combo I would be super into, I was surprised to find myself drawn to the idea. I pictured wearing this dress on a warm spring day with a white cardigan and red accessories. Then I found out those polka dots are actually tiny pink roses and for a short while that put me off, because that ‘Amy’s taste’ folder said tiny roses would be too twee for me. But, as I am discovering more and more as I get older, sometimes my gut is wrong, and in this case it was, because the tiny roses are super cute and the blue of this dress is absolutely perfect. Also, as it turns out, that styling I imagined? It still totally works.
