We all know it by now: I’m a plaid girl. In winter when it’s cold and dark and (in England at least) wet, plaid fabrics feel comforting and cosy, a consolation prize for the short days and relentless chill. I also love that there’s such a variety of effects that can be achieved with a plaid, dependant upon the colour combinations employed, the fabric type and the way those things interact with the cut of a piece. For the Unique Vintage Delores dress, the black, white and red plaid utilised on one of their signature sleeved designs creates a classic and dramatic look that will have you reaching for it all season long.
Some dresses are so special there’s almost no adequate way to describe them, but still I will try. The Cupcake dress by Unique Vintage is frothy, delicate, glamorous and timeless, not to mention as sweet as its name suggests. It’s the kind of dress that makes me immediately flash back to watching Grease on repeat as a child, marveling at the intricacy and beauty of those prom dresses, with their full skirts, their cinched waists, those incredible fluffy busts. Like milkshakes in dress form, if you happen to like drinking milkshakes filled with diamonds and silk. That’s the kind of sugary level of optimum glamour we’re talking about, and I love it.
More accurately, I F*#&ing love it, but let’s pretend for this post at least that I am as ladylike as this dress suggests and that my fervent passion for splendid clothing would never move me to such crass heights.
(Except that it does and it has, many a time. But still. Let’s pretend.)
Now, put on your gloves and your sparkliest shoes and let’s look at this utter beauty together. Continue reading
I’m certainly not known for being afraid of bright colours, but even I’ve got to admit the Del Ray dress by Unique Vintage might be taking that love of brights to new heights.
I saw it previewed at London Edge back in February and featured it then in my review post among my favourite picks from UV’s upcoming line, so its fearlessly bold striped print definitely captured me right from the off. Still, when it arrived and I pulled it from its bag, unfurling it before me in the air of a dim English morning, I had the slightest moment of pause: wow, was it too bright for me? Within a split second I had remembered myself: Nah! I’m good.
Let’s do this Del Ray, you beautifully obnoxious burst of Californian sunshine!
It’s not often I reach for anything other than a full-skirted 50s dress. Even all the beautiful gathered border print skirts I own get massively overlooked, because wearing a dress is just so much easier than pairing together separates. Dresses always come across as effort intensive and fancy to people who don’t often wear them, but those of us with a closet full of dresses know the secret truth: they are the laziest, easiest way to look put together with almost no effort. With my 50s style swing dresses, that just means zipping one up and tugging on a fluffy petticoat underneath. Continue reading
When you’re a bit of a shopaholic, sometimes you have to tow the line and pass over buying something you really want. If you’re lucky you’ll later be pleased you saved your pennies, because your shopping lust for that dress (or lipstick, or pair of shoes) dissipated faster than your attraction to that cute looking dude you saw on the street last week who turned around only to reveal he was sporting a rat’s tail hairstyle.
Those are the best case near-misses. You get to pat yourself on the back and congratulate yourself at your Supreme Adulting. Continue reading
The Darcy dress by Unique Vintage is another one of those dresses, the kind I immediately fell in love with as soon as I first glimpsed it. It landed in my inbox as part of a New Arrivals email from UV and, though I had only just woken up, the sight of it made me a little bit grabby as I clicked through to the website with sleep still in my eyes.
In truth, I’ve been tempted by the Darcy dress before, but the previous prints hadn’t felt entirely ‘me,’ only managing to tempt me without convincing me. It wasn’t until I saw this red and cream print that I felt the I HAVE TO HAVE IT urgent feels. You know those feels. Of course you do, you read this blog; just between me and you, darling, there’s no point in denying we get a bit too excited at the sight of pretty dresses. It might be a bit weird to the not-so-clothing-obsessed, but it makes us happy. And this Darcy dress definitely makes me happy.
The Golightly dress by Unique Vintage is one of their staples pieces, offered in new colours and prints every season. I’ve been kicking myself for a couple years already for missing out on their perfect mint striped colourway, because goddamnit, mint stripes! So I was thrilled to see their new colours this season included a pink striped one. No, I’m still not a pink girl, but from their stock pictures it looked much more red than pink, which was why I was so taken with it: I am all about a red stripe. I decided to take the plunge and pray for red.
Okay, so if you’re familiar with Hamilton, the musical, then you’ll get the title reference of this post. You’ll probably also understand that when I first saw the Hamilton dress from Unique Vintage, yes, I did immediately love it for the dress itself, but I also at least partially snapped it up because of its name. I just had to. I’ve had the cast recording soundtrack playing on repeat for a couple months now and my heart is sad that I can’t see the show since I live in the UK (not that anyone can see the show really, sold out as it is) but now at the very least I can don this dress, head out into the sunshine and enjoy its musical namesake with a pair of headphones.
Unique Vintage really know how to do gingham. At this point I’ve sort of become an accidental collector of the picnic-tastic print, rarely able to resist adding a new gingham piece to my wardrobe, but one of my all time favourite gingham pieces is this UV Manhattan swing dress.
It might even have been my first UV purchase, it was too long ago to remember now. It’s one of those pieces that’s so gorgeous that every time I wear it people ask where they can get it, which makes me feel a bit guilty and sad when I have to admit it’s long gone. Today, thankfully, I won’t be putting you through such heartache, because this San Vicente gingham halter dress is not only a new offering from Unique Vintage in their SS16 line, but it’s also widely in stock in sizes XS-4X and comes in both pink and black gingham. As we continue through the chillier seasons my search continues for more half or long sleeved vintage-style dresses, which aren’t always easy to find. It can be easier somehow to find them in thicker, restrictive fabrics, dresses that are smarter or more formal, but a comfortable sleeved piece is rarer. So say hello to the Unique Vintage Iconic Delores dress, a dress that can be both formal and casual depending entirely upon styling! Since Christmas is already nipping at our heels I whipped out this Poinsettia-red dress and styled it simply with the season in mind, thinking of Santa and his big black boots.
