January Outfits Round Up

I’m not gonna lie, 2017 started off rough. There were some family health scares and accidents that, coupled with an insane workload throughout the whole month in my department at work, really left me feeling low on energy and not much in the mood to dress up some days. I think sometimes since vintage dressing is such a time-consuming and energy-intensive style that ladies can look at pinups who wear this style every day, or at least regularly, and think ‘Wow, they’re flawless and they seem to find it so easy! I don’t think I can do that,’ then get put off the idea of dabbling with the style.

So in the interest of full disclosure, I want any of you lovelies who sometimes feel that way, or who feel discouraged in general by the seemingly perfect pinup lives so easily presented on social media, to know that that perfection or ease or even excitement isn’t necessarily the full truth. While typically getting dolled up gives me energy and positive feelings, this month I’ve just been too low on energy to enjoy it in the same way. Normally wearing jeans and a hoody in public makes me feel weirdly both exposed and invisible, but this month it’s often what I’ve felt I’ve needed simply because I just couldn’t be bothered to care about my appearance so much. And there’s nothing wrong with that, whether that’s a temporary or a permanent status for anyone, but I wanted to take this opportunity to remind everyone that you can wear what you want, when you want, and it doesn’t mean anything other than ‘this is the outfit that I wanted to wear today.’ You do you, boo.

Saying that, I got my 50% off Collectif order through this month, holla, and that injected a little more excitement back into my wardrobeI have a week off work in February and I’m hoping to fill it with some fun activities and much procrastinated productivity, so here’s hoping next month leaves me feeling revitalised and ready to get my pinup on with my usual enthusiasm.

Happy New Year to you, if I haven’t said it already; I hope January has treated you kindly and that you feel hopeful and happy wherever you are. And now, on to the clothes!

My Makeup Faves: Edition V

It’s been quite a while since I’ve done one of these (uh, last April) and there’s lots of new items I’ve found that I love so let’s waste no more time. Here are all my latest favourites of the new products I’ve tried in the past few months. Continue reading

True Inspiration [Heart of Haute]

I’ve been into black clothing much more this winter than I ever have in the past. It’s always been chic and smart to me, but suddenly I’ve been more interested in black clothes of different textures, fabrics and finishes. Anything black with an interesting design detail has been more likely to catch my eye, so when I first saw images of this Heart of Haute Inspiration top I suddenly became a YES SIREE SIGN ME UP OYESOYESOYES THATS IT RIGHT THURR GOOD LAWD MA’AM HOT DAMN internet meme reaction of a person.

As with the HoH Divine Jacket I reviewed last week this top immediately jumped to the top of my wishlist, but with pre-Christmas budgeting in action I didn’t purchase it until several weeks later during Cyber Week from Deadly is the Female, UK stockist of many of the best quality vintage inspired brands. The moment it arrived it jumped to the top of another one of my lists, the Super Comfortable But Also Really Chic Clothing To Wear list. That’s one of my favourite lists because it means the items on it don’t require my squishy bits to suffer for my glamorous tastes by way of cinching and pinching, so right away this top was a winner.

Friday I’m In Love

Ah, January, you nemesis to the monthly budget. Christmas has gone and so have the sales, and still, still, what would you know, there are pretty things to covet. Who woulda thunk it?

B.A.I.T Footwear

These Haku boots kill me. I keep launching on desperate internet searches to find something similar that I can actually justify spending out on this month but alas, I always have to concede that my search results just cannot live up to these beauties. One day, perhaps. One day. Continue reading

Scalloping Along [Bettie Page Shoes]

Bettie Page Black Minny D'orsay scalloped heels

Black is considered the (non) colour that goes with everything, suitable for all occasions, stylish and simple and chic. And you know what? I just don’t wear a lot of it. Or, at least, I didn’t used to. In my first couple years of pinup life it was all bright colour all the time. In winter, when I packed away my most summery and colourful of clothes, I pined for them all season long, yearning for the first signs of spring when I could break out the florals and the colours of every shade and brightness.

This winter, though, for the first time, I’ve really been reveling in dressing in the darker shades associated with the season, enjoying the heavy fabrics, drawn to more simpler, plain designs. It’s a change for me, and while I feel my first instinct will always be to finish off almost any outfit with a red shoe, I’ve found that this new liking of darker colours and different styles has been carrying through to my shoe choices as well. Utterly Divine [Heart of Haute]

Divine by name, divine by nature, this faux-fur trimmed jacket first caught my eye at London Edge previews back in September and hasn’t left me since. You might think, considering that, that I had planned to buy it, but I actually talked myself out of needing it in an unusual spurt of very adulty budgetary conscientiousness. (Yes, because I’m sure real adults say ‘adulty.’ I also say ‘Growed-ups.’ I’m not kidding anyone, am I?)

Yes, it’s a gorgeous piece that can be worn both as top and jacket, but I have more than one faux fur trimmed coat and rarely wear wiggles, with which I felt it would pair best, so it just made sense to let it pass me by.

…Buuuut then UK favourites Deadly is the Female began to stock it and OH WOULD YOU LOOK AT THAT MUMMA’S GOT HERSELF A SEXY NEW FLUFF JACKET. Whoopsie! #sorrynotsorry

April in the New Year [Dancing Days]

Dancing Days have a lot of cute things on offer this season, some of them new colourways of existing separates, like the April cardigan. I first saw it last season and came close many a time to buying it, for some reason never completing the purchase. This season, though, the new colours include mustard yellow and a rich emerald green, two of my favourites, so finally a purchase was guaranteed. In my heart of hearts I wanted the mustard colourway, but since I already have DD’s Modern Love top in that shade as well as a MAK cropped cardigan in mustard, I decided to get the dark green. I think I made the right choice.

Photoshoot Bloopers & Outtakes [Round 6]

It’s time again. Time to look behind the painted glass at what it really looks like for a vintage blogger to get her weekly outfit photos. From battling wind and rain to the frustrations of passing traffic and the general public walking in and out of shot (how dare they!), there’s a lot of ways a blogshoot to go wrong…and that’s without taking into account my face. Oh, my poor face. Let’s laugh at it.

Isadora, I Adore Her [Hell Bunny]

Navy Hell Bunny Isadora Coat

Y’all, faux fur trim has got me feeling some kind of way this winter. Don’t get me wrong, I own several faux fur pieces I bought prior to this latest cold snap; I have faux fur shawls and shrugs, a trimmed coat, a trimmed skirt suit, even. But this season, no. This season it’s different. I’ve been buying or Watch Listing faux furs of every colour. I bought a wrap jacket with cuff and collar trimming while putting two trimmed dresses and a cape bolero on my wishlists for Christmas. And all the while I kept revisiting the Hell Bunny site every few days, loading up the product page of the Isadora coat and pining. Sighing. Swooning.

As the kids these days say: much want.  Continue reading

Off On The Right Foot [Blue Banana]

Banned Moss Garden Hound Heels Dancing Days from Blue Banana

Let’s get this out of the way: I own a lot of shoes. We’re easily talking over 65 pairs of heels. Just heels. Add in flats and we’re probably nearing 90. I know, it sounds excessive, perhaps downright ridiculous, but let’s look at it sensibly: one pair of black strappy wedges does not equally work well for office wear or a full day’s walk around a city in autumn as it does for a summertime BBQ, though an outfit for each of those scenarios may require black shoes of some description. I wear a lot of red accessories, but different outfits might respectively require red mary jane low heels, a killer pair of red cork heeled wedges with red ankle ties, red bedazzled ballet pumps, red faux suede heels or satin red bow slides. Hence…the downward spiral into multiple shoe racks of a bagillion pairs of pretty pretties for my little piggies. Continue reading
