Tiki Teatime [Pretty Retro]

I’ve been dressing in vintage styles for 5 years now, my love for swishy skirts, perfect curls and a crisp cats-eye wing ever-growing. Dressing in this way has given me an endless boost of confidence and an excitement to get dressed, replacing the common dread many face when having to consider what they should wear when they leave the house. For me, embracing vintage fashion has given more than just my wardrobe a new lease on life.

I tend to dwell in the 1950s, where the cinched waists and full skirts make me feel most at home, but embracing such an unusual style of dressing–by today’s standards–has also taught me that it’s good to shake things up occasionally with something different. For me, that tends to mean either slipping into a form fitting wiggle dress or winding back the clock a further decade to dabble in the styles of the 40s. Today, we’re looking at an example of the latter, by taking a spin in something that is a first for me, shockingly, even after 5 years of vintage dressing–my first ever tea dress.

May Outfits Round Up

May is always a great month; it encapsulates my birthday, which I really do drag out for the entire month. But even that aside, it’s been sunny, I’ve been able to spend a lot of lovely time with friends and family, and even though I’m generally not bothered either way by the Royals, I must admit I ended up being swept away by with the excitement surrounding the big wedding, and rather touched by it. Now we’re looking forward to June, which begins the string of summer birthdays among my loved ones that always makes for lots of laughs and fun. If the weather could settle on being sunny but as a mild 18c with a gentle breeze, that would set us up for perfection!

Roses in the Garden [Lady V London]

Summer is approaching, swiftly it feels with our recent bursts of sunshine, but I know the English weather so I’m certain that it can be relied upon to rain on our parade, quite literally, to keep that spring feeling alive for a few weeks more. My favourite apple tree hasn’t blossomed yet, after all, so until it does I am determined to consider it spring. It is, if you didn’t know, my favourite season, as well as the perfect excuse to frolic in every dainty floral frock in one’s wardrobe. Today I add another, with this gorgeous Beautiful Roses print Liliana by Lady V London.

Harriet in the Country [Joanie Clothing]

Here’s the thing; my favourite thing about the vintage silhouette of which I’m most enamoured is definitely the full, swishy skirt flowing down from a cinched waist, but sometimes in summer the dedication and discomfort it takes to stay committed to that silhouette is just too much. Sometimes you just need an easy, breezy summer dress that reminds you of your favourite vintage features without all the layers and cinching and sweating. Sometimes you just gotta relax. Spring Mint [Unique Vintage]

Once upon a time, I wasn’t really a fan of plain coloured dresses. Occasionally I would give them a try, but inevitably I’d never end up wearing them enough and I’d pass them on. I was all about prints, often the brighter the better. These days, though, I think I finally see the merit in a solid coloured dress. It’s a blank canvas. There’s nothing, really, to limit your imagination. You can go wild with accessorising, you can create a dozen very different looks. A plain dress is only as plain as your palette. And with as pretty a solid as this Unique Vintage mint Luna, who, really, would dare call it plain?

Blue Skies in Waldorf [Unique Vintage]

One of my favourite things about spring is when our fruit trees begin to blossom. Thanks to the late snow this year I was a little paranoid that they wouldn’t, but eventually the little buds began to show themselves, just a few weeks behind schedule. Now the blossoms are in full swing, making me endlessly happy each time I look at them.

This Waldorf dress from Unique Vintage, while not technically featuring blossoms as part of the floral print, still puts me in mind of those delicate, fluffy flowers that bring me such joy, thanks to the gorgeous colours of the print; the white flowers and their rich green leaves set against a soft blue that feels like sky. It all reminds me of a clear spring day encouraging the growth of the blossoms I love, so on just such a day recently passed I couldn’t help but head out into the garden to introduce it to Waldorf.

Always a surprise, mostly a pleasure, always weird. I mean, obviously it then went right back to April showers, but having sun wake up all the blossoms finally has truly made my month. Full of Roses [Love UR Look]

If you’ve been following my blog for a long time you’ll be familiar with Love Ur Look. Like many other companies, I’ve featured them here almost every season since this blog began, but I’m sure if you looked back through my past reviews you’d recognise the pieces I shared instantaneously; because if there’s one thing Love UR Look knows how to do, it’s produce dresses that don’t look like anyone else’s.

Their dresses are always unique, often made in original hand-drawn fabrics or re-imagined vintage prints, and almost always featuring little design details I just don’t see anywhere else. Necklines that are shaped by atomic-inspired zig zag cut outs, bodices that feature layered fabric folds that give the word ‘structure’ a new meaning, contrasting panels layered over novelty fabrics with brightly coloured buttons. Whenever I see a Love UR Look dress, I can always tell the brand without needing to check a caption or a label or a website. Today, we’re looking at one of their more gentle, less novelty designs, in a flower print that shares my mother’s name: today we gaze at roses.
